New Public Mural “Grow Where You Are Planted” Blooms at Mayfair Art Studios

Spartanburg artist Hannah A. St. James invites the community to connect through art, healing, and legacy.

SPARTANBURG, SC — [May 1, 2025] — A bold new mural is transforming the historic campus of Mayfair Art Studios in Spartanburg’s westside. Titled “Grow Where You Are Planted” and created by multidisciplinary artist and community advocate Hannah A. St. James, this vibrant work of public art is a love letter to resilience, rootedness, and rebirth.

Commissioned as part of a community-driven initiative to celebrate creative expression in underrepresented spaces, the mural now lives on the outer wall of Mayfair Art Studios, located at 1885 Hayne St, Spartanburg, SC 29301—a Chapman Cultural Center campus devoted to empowering artists and engaging the public through accessible art.

“This piece was born from my own experiences of having to start over in unfamiliar places,” says St. James. “It’s about hope. It’s about claiming space even when it doesn’t feel like it was made for you. It’s about planting roots anyway.”

The mural’s imagery combines pastel tones,and blooming petals, that represent personal transformation and communal strength. It invites viewers—especially those who’ve felt unseen or displaced—to find beauty in becoming, no matter where they stand.

St. James is also the founder of Studio 22x2, a creative collective dedicated to supporting local artists, entrepreneurs, and storytellers through mentorship, exhibitions, and community workshops. This mural marks a major milestone in the development of her larger mission: to cultivate a future where art isn’t just decoration, but dialogue.

A short documentary on the making of the mural, also titled Grow Where You Are Planted, will debut later this year, featuring behind-the-scenes footage, community reflections, and the artist’s personal journey. The public can follow the project on social media using #muralatmayfair.
